Volunteering Summary

I started volunteering at OSF Holy Family in the Fall Semester of 2019, and continue to volunteer as much time as I can while maintaining a balanced schedule with my studies. I usually volunteered for two hours a week doing various activities. When I was on Campus for Doc Kieft, I was able to volunteer every week during the summer. One of the mainstays of this volunteering experience is the comfort cart. This cart is pushed through the in-patient wing of the hospital by volunteers. The cart contains free items such as combs, coloring books, and word searches that the patients can choose to receive. When pushing the cart, volunteers go into each room and talk to the patients. This is what I really enjoyed because I actually had some sort of patient interaction, and I was doing something to help better their stay. Another task I have done is run medical samples to the lab. If patients are not sure where to go, I have escorted people to the various wings of the hospital to get where they need to go. I have also helped coordinate certain contests among the workers, such as cutest pet contests. Essentially, the volunteers at OSF do whatever they can to help the hospital run smoothly.
