As indicated in the faculty statues, FIDC has the "every-year" responsibility to make a call for new faculty/staff positions, review submitted proposals, and then make recommendations to the Dean about hiring decisions. As a part of this process, FIDC needs to understand and document program/department needs and then convey these to the Dean of the Faculty. As an ex officio member, the Dean is involved in all committee conversations.
The process of making and reviewing the call for new faculty/staff has evolved over the years and the current FIDC committee feels that we need to revisit this critical process. As in past years, FIDC receives the following data from the Dean in order to assist in making recommendations:
- - Course Credit per FTE by Department(past 10 years)
- - Graduated Majors Summary Report by Department (with 5 and 10 year average)
- - Total Majors Summary by Department (with 5 and 7 year averages)
- - Majors of Incoming Students (past ~10 years)
In addition to these documents, FIDC would like to request that each program/department begin to generate and maintain a Program History Document. An example of such a document for the Dept of Chemistry is shown below:
This Program History Document will be used to identifying short and long-term staffing needs in order to make recommendations. the committee feels that . Hence, the committee will review the past 5 years of FIDC recommendations as a part of the review process. The committee would like to continue to hear about your current needs, and your long-term plans, including proposals for new tenure-track, long-term continuing lines, and staff positions to support the College infrastructure. The Committee seeks to understand how individual departmental or programmatic requests fit into college-wide initiatives, including but not limited to Integrated Studies and curricular innovations.
During this review process, FIDC will also engage in conversation with the Dean regarding the feasibility of adding faculty and staff to the current employment pool. The committee has been given access to departmental/student data (number of majors, number of graduates) and will use this data during the review process. The committee will rank proposals as high, medium, or low priority in our recommendation; in addition, the financial impact of the proposal may be considered in the recommendation.
FIDC invites departments and programs to submit staffing (faculty or staff) proposals for new faculty positions with a due date of XXX, 2019.
FIDC considers these proposals as a continuing process to evaluate current and long-term staffing needs. When compared to other institutions of our size, the 2016 data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS; https://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/) indicates that Monmouth College employs 98% of the average FTE faculty (we had 103 FTE that year, our comparison group averaged 105) and 89% of the average staff (we had 174 that year and our comparison group 196). These numbers are up considerably from previous years (~92% of faculty and ~68% of staff).
