Proposal

The purpose of this study is to attain a greater understanding of the chemical properties of the α- and β-acid standards prepared from hops. Motivation for pursuing this research originated on the research contained in Preparation of α- and β-acid Standards from Hops, which was carried out by Andrea E. Gasow, Chris J. Knutson, Dr. Bradley E. Sturgeon, and Dr. Michael R. Prinsell. Prior to Andrea Gasgow's research, no method had been established for the preparation of α- and β-acid standards from Hops. My goal is to duplicate this method for the preparative separation of α- and β-acid standards from Hops, only in larger concentrations, so that a more in depth chemical analysis can be carried out on each of the standards. Utilizing the preparative method for separation α- and β-acid standards from hops, I intend on attaining a greater understanding of the chemical properties these acids individually.

Instruments to be used

Flash Chromatography, High Pressure Liquid Chromatography, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance
