Online General Chemistry (Chem 140)
Welcome to an online version of General Chemistry. Under special curcumstances, in this case the outbreak of the coronavirus, an online version of General Chemistry is being developed. It is our hope that we can go back to meeting in person, although this is unlikely.

Process
Please stay tuned to this section to clarify any expectations related to teaching this course online.
Remider: Academic honesty is required of all members of our community. Grades (and eventually diplomas) are awarded on the basis of faculty evaluation of individual student learning and performance. Trust must exist between faculty and student. The integrity of your Monmouth College diploma is at stake.
Statement of Great Importance
- It is critical that you document all work done associated with this online class and that this material can be presented to the instructor upon request. Make sure to clearly label the assignments in order to keep organized.
Lecture notes
You will be provided lecture notes (see links below in the schedule table). Here is an example of partial instructors notes -->
I suggest that you have a notebook, just like in class, and treat this as if i wrote it on the whiteboard. If i were to ask you to email me a photo of lecture notes from day XYZ, then you could just snap a picture of these notes and email. If you prefer to do electronic annotation, then a screenshot will do.
Worksheets
I will provide worksheets that can be completed via rewriting (preferred), printed and completed, or electronically annotated. For example, here is a worksheet we have already completed --> chemical reactions worksheet (don't do this now). If i asked to confirm you completed this worksheet, then you could snap a picture and email it, or send a screenshot.
Homework
I will let you know by email or posted on the schedule below when a Webassignment (WA) is up.
Lab Activities
It is my hope that i will provide you with some materials/data from labs. This may include processing data (Excel), calculations, and/or a WebAssignment. As above, this work must be documented, so you can write (preferred), print and completed, or electronically annotate. If you do not have access to Excel, then you can make plots by hand. Of course WA work is easily documented.
Quizzes and Exams
WA has been used up to this point as a homework and lab system, but will now also be used for timed quizzes (maybe) and exams. I can setup a WA to allow you a specific time (ie. 55 mins) to complete an assignment. I will tell you a day, but not a time when you take the exam, once you start you will have the specified time. Remember, graded work is your own work, i can see when you submit answers...it is unlikely that any two people will start at the exact same time.
Final Grades
All work, including lecture notes, worksheets, WA, labs, quizzes, and exams MAY be evaluated when assigning a final grades. All non-WA work that will be evaluated MAY or MAY NOT be requested via email, but you must be prepared to provide any and all documentation of your efforts.
As stated in the syllabus,
- - exams are 40% of your grade,
- - HW/Quizzes 10%,
- - class participation/notes 5%,
- - lab 25%, and
- - final exam 20%.
Since lab is not able to meet, some modification will be made to this % based on the fact that we will not meet, but that you have already completed 1/2 for the semester already.
