The 1-electron oxidation of a phenol can be accomplished via chemical or enzymatic means.

Chemical Means

1. KMnO4

KMnO4

To make a 2 mM solution of KMnO4, we added 0.03g of KMnO4 solid to 100 mL dH2O

To make a 2 mM solution of BHA, we added 0.0304 g of solid HPA to 100 mL dH2O

2. Cerium (IV)

For Cerium Free Radicals: 100 mL solution of 2 mM HPA and 100 mL solution of Ce (IV).

For 100 mL of 2 mM HPA:

Weigh out 30.4mg of HPA

Add it into 100 mL DI water

For 100 mL of 2 mM Ce (IV)

Weigh out 109.6 mg of Ammonium Cerium Nitrate

Add that to 2.5 mL of 18M sulfuric acid

Add that solution to 97.5 mL of DI water
