As we have in the past, FIDC would also ask you to consider and submit needed support positions in your area, or across the campus.  These are not necessarily requests for positions, though they may be; these are simply informed insights into what would help faculty or programs function better.  Since data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) has pretty consistently shown that we run at about 92% of our expected faculty levels, but only 68% of our expected staff levels, we would appreciate gathering your best insights into where future support hiring might be most fruitful.

When compared to other institutions of our size, the 2016 data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS; https://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/) indicates that Monmouth College employs 98% of the average FTE faculty (we had 103 FTE that year, our comparison group averaged 105) and 89% of the average staff (we had 174 that year and our comparison group 196). These numbers are up considerably from previous years (~92% of faculty and ~68% of staff).

Our goal, as well as our ideal, is to help the College plan strategically for the future.  FIDC should look at departmental exigencies but must keep an eye on institutional needs and be able to coordinate both levels as it proposes new positions.  Rather than reacting solely to departmental needs, FIDC will consider proposals over and against each other which will, in turn, allow us to assess their merits relative to the other needs we perceive, both near- and long-term.

Colleagues,

FIDC invites departments and programs to submit staffing (faculty or staff) proposals for new faculty positions with a due date of Mon, November 6th, 2017.

As indicated in the faculty statues, FIDC will review the submitted proposals and make recommendations to the Dean about hiring decisions. During this review process, FIDC will also engage in conversation with the Dean regarding the feasibility of adding faculty and staff to the current employment pool. The committee has been given access to departmental/student data (number of majors, number of graduates) and will use this data during the review process. The committee will rank proposals as high, medium, or low priority in our recommendation; in addition, the financial impact of the proposal may be considered in the recommendation.

FIDC considers these proposals as a continuing process to evaluate current and long-term staffing needs. Hence, the committee will review the past 5 years of FIDC recommendations as a part of the review process. The committee would like to continue to hear about your current needs, and your long-term plans, including proposals for new tenure-track, long-term continuing lines, and staff positions to support the College infrastructure. The Committee seeks to understand how individual departmental or programmatic requests fit into college-wide initiatives, including but not limited to Integrated Studies and curricular innovations.

FIDC thanks you for your efforts; we look forward to receiving/reviewing your proposals. Please send proposals to Brad Sturgeon, co-chair FIDC.
