Revision as of 14:21, 9 March 2020

This is a planning page for a future business idea related to analytical testing mainly spurred by the cannabis industry.

Lab Certification

ISO/IEC_17025

"ISO/IEC 17025 is the standard for which most labs must hold accreditation in order to be deemed technically competent"

International Accreditation Service

ISO/IEC 17025: 2017 General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories

ISO 17025 reference documents:
International vocabulary of metrology — Basic and general concepts and associated terms (VIM)

Testing Procedures

cannabis

- CBD/THC + for year round growth in greenhouses
- hemp compliance (Aug-sept), in addition we could offer a "testing plan" starting in July thru harvest so that the grower could evaluate and learn more about oil formation...meaning we could charge a customer $X for yearly testing to get "contracts."
- other cannabis testing not yet on the scene...ex. CBN, or other cannabinoids (~70 in total).

Hops

- Alpha and beta acid testings for growers in the midwest...not sure who is doing this testing at this time, but it is required by all growers.
- IBU measurements (+ SRM) in craft beers...a growing market.

Specialty markets like herbs

Water testing

Plastics/biodegradability/formulations

Instrumentation

a) HPLC - high performance liquid chromatography (~$30K)
b) IC - Ion chromatography (~$20K)
c) UV-Vis Spectroscopy (~$8K)
d) Basic lab equipment
- stir plates ($500)
- hot plate ($500)
- shaker ($500)
- pipettors ($400)
e) Chemicals and consumables (~$2000)

Space and People

f) Space (cheap in Monmouth), insurance, utilities
g) people

Collaboration

Highlander Analytical could partner with Monmouth College to provide some research support/collaboration. We could hire student workers with the main PhD scientist (past student) as Chief-Science-Officer or lab manager.
