This day of celebration will be called, “Scholar’s Day Celebration” and will be held on April 19th from 2-5 pm in conjunction with Founder’s/Scot’s Day. Below is the official announcement of the event which will be posted shortly. *********************Announcement of Scholar’s Day Celebration*********************** A great majority of Monmouth College students engage in academic scholarship above and beyond standard academic expectations put before them in the classroom. It is too often the case that this scholarship stays confined to the boundaries of the classroom or academic building. It is time to free these activities and to come together as a campus to share the excitement that happens each day at Monmouth College. It is time to recognize such scholarship; on April 19, 2011 from 2-5 pm the campus community will come together to celebrate, along aside the Founder’s Day activities, these student scholars. This celebration will hence forth be known as the Scholar's Day Celebration. Scholarship is broadly defined as an inquiry or investigation conducted by a student that makes an original intellectual or creative contribution to the discipline (as defined by the Council on Undergraduate Research). This scholarship can be a result of student-faculty collaboration, an independent study, or project that highlights exemplary works done as a part of coursework. All presentations will have a faculty or staff sponsor who is ultimately responsible for insuring the intellectual merit. All students are welcome to present; all students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend. Presentations can take the form of a poster, an exhibit, a reading, a theatrical or musical performance, or a summary of a larger performance. ***************************************************************************** Attached to this email is a tentative layout of the event in the Huff. As of now, we have reserved space for ~50 posters on new poster board displays currently being made by Warren Achievement Center/Achievement Industries (WAC/AI). There is an additional “game plan” to accommodate more posters if needed (there is wall-space that could be used as well as the glass wall looking into Glennie Gym). Posters space has been requested from Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Math and Computer Science, and Psychology. We will have two readings (MFL and History). Art will bring their own display stands. There will be a theater performance area and a separate musical performance area. Physical education will be using the fitness center and possibly the display tables outside the Glennie Gym. Food and drink will be provided. Here is the proposed timing: Session 1 (2-2:45) - posters - Art - performances (reading, music, theater) Welcome (3-3:05) - from President Ditzler and/or Dean Timmerman. Session 2 (3:15 – 4) - poster - Art - performances (reading, music, theater) Session 3 (4-on) - Music Department Honors Recital in Dahl Chapel & Auditorium Kasch Performance Hall - Ms Hudson’s Tea in Mellinger Center. Students/faculty sponsors will be requested to submit title and authors; poster boards will be assigned. Promotion of the event will be left to the individual departments. If dept have a particular preference to the time of the presentation please state, BUT I would like to split a department, equally between the two sessions to encourage attendance. A final schedule will be forwarded after feedback is received. Brad Sturgeon and Michael Harrison Co-organizers and representatives of the Student Affairs Committee
